  16. What is the difference between a Standard and an Advantage Server certificate?
An Advantage SSL certificate contains different certificate extensions than a Standard SSL certificate. There are two additional extensions to an Advantage certificate which can provide greater functionality.

These extensions are Client Authentication and Subject Alternative Name (DNS only).

A Standard SSL certificate contains only the Server authentication extension and can be used for browser-to-server SSL communication only.

An Advantage SSL certificate can be used for browser-to-server and server-to-server SSL security. As well you can have two virtual web servers secured with one SSL certificate via the Subject Alternative Name extension (SubjectAltName).

    (top)

  17. What purpose can SSL Server Authentication be used for?
    Sever Authentication example:
Environment: Windows 2003 running MS IIS 6.0

These certificates create a secure, confidential communications "pipe" between the web server and the browser. This SSL certificate communication only supports identification of the web server to enable the customer to know the identity of the site they are accessing. This can also be called one way SSL authentication

    (top)

  18. What purpose can SSL Subject Alternative Name be used for?
    SubjectAltName example:

Environment: Windows 2003 running MS IIS 6.0

One web site configured and this site through DNS responds to 2 names.
The site is currently being accessed by internal users and external users.
The SubjectAltName can therefore be used to reflect the internal DNS name.

This will resolve the common security alert that occurs when a certificate is only signed for the external FQDN.

    (top)

  19. What purpose can SSL Client Authentication be used for?
    Client Authentication example:

    Environment: Windows 2003 running a B2B application

Both servers create a secure, confidential communications "pipe" between the web server and the browser and other servers. This certificate communication supports the identification of both the web server and the customer to enable all parties to know exactly who is on the other end of the transaction. This can also be called two way SSL authentication.

  20. How do I install an Advantage SSL Certificate in my environment?
The installation of an Advantage SSL Certificate is the same as a Standard SSL Certificate and will be subject to specific requirements for your application. In general, the changes that are required to make use of an Advantage SSL Certificate are done on the target server and not the server where the certificate will be installed. These changes can be very specific and will greatly depend on the applications and environments involved.
