The Origins of Secure Sockets Layer
Secure sockets layer (SSL) is a cryptographic protocol designed to secure communications and data exchanges done via the Internet. It was developed and employed after the concern for security began dominating the use of the Internet, particularly in the late 1990s when electronic commerce and global business rushed the Internet scene. Not very long before that, however, the Internet was something far more limited: nothing more than several small physical stations connected together for communication. Once this channel is enabled, the data transmitted between the two endpoints is encrypted and, so long as the channel remains open, this SSL encryption will be maintained throughout the session. This allows any sensitive data to be readily transmitted while preventing unauthorized users from capturing it. By providing this secure SSL pipeline and encrypting end-to-end transfers of sensitive information, secure sockets layer technology quickly became synonymous with protecting the integrity of online communication.
