Why am I prompted with the error message “ASN1 bad tag value met” when I try to install my SSL Certificate in IIS 7?

Article Number: 46409

Question:
Why am I prompted with the error message “ASN1 bad tag value met” when I try to install my SSL certificate in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7?

Answer:
If you are getting this error message, there might be a problem with the certificate private key and the way that is has automatically been stored by Windows when the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) was created.

As a work around, try installing your certificate using the solution described in the following technote:

TN 7905 - What are the steps to recover the private key of an SSL certificate in an IIS environment?

If you are successful in recovering the private key using this method, then complete the certificate installation by going to your Web site in IIS and assigning the HTTPS bindings. The steps to complete this task are described under the IIS 7 Server Certificate installation instructions found here.

If you are unsuccessful in recovering the private key, you will be required to create a new CSR and request a reissue of the certificate.
